Presidential Debate: Rhetorical Analysis

The 2016 Presidential debate took place on Monday, September 26. It was held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The two participants debating were Hillary Clinton representing the Democratic Party and Donald Trump representing the Republican Party. Both candidates expressed why they were the better opponent to create more jobs that put more money into the pockets of American workers. They also discussed how to bring back industries that left the country for cheaper labor overseas. Lastly, since Secretary Clinton promotes tax increase and Trump promotes tax cuts, they discussed the fundamental difference between their concern of taxes on the wealthy. Clinton’s voiced that more needs to be done to support people who are struggling to balance family and work. Donald Trump’s motto is that America needs to be made great again.

Candidate Hillary Clinton promotes putting forth more effort in supporting struggling families trying to stay afloat in this economy. Clinton’s political views benefit more of the middle and lower class Americans because she could relate to her family once trying to make ends meet. She advocates that we need to invest in affordable child care, debt-free college, and also make investments that will actually produce jobs and rising incomes. In order to do so, she proposes that the wealthy pay their fair share and close the corporate loopholes. Clinton also expresses that lots of jobs and new economic activity can be provided by getting into the idea of solar energy and building a new modern electric grid. She is confident that will arrange enough clean energy to power every home. Secretary Clinton’s plan stated that we can get our economy moving again and pay for her proposals by increasing the taxes on the wealthy; not in more tax cuts that would add $5 trillion to the debt.

However candidate Donald Trump, promotes that we need to make America great again. Trump’s political views appeal more to the upper class Americans. He declares that we no longer allow jobs and businesses to leave our country. Trump also voiced that we must stop or jobs from being stolen from us by China and other countries. It is stated in his plans to do so by actually cutting the taxes tremendously from thirty-five to fifteen percent of companies, small and big businesses. By cutting taxes, companies will come, they will build, they will expand and new companies will start. nonetheless he did not explain how he would bring back industries that fled the country. Instead, Donald Trump invoked rumors, suggesting that Secretary Clinton and other politicians were to blame for the state of the economy, to support his views on how the country’s economy should run.

Hillary Clinton clearly won the first presidential debate of 2016. It was evident that she took the time to actually prepare for the debate. She provided resolutions with good detail to helping our economy grow and survive. Unlike trump, Secretary Clinton offered resolutions that would help construct an economy that works for everyone instead of one specific social class. It is indubitable that her political views speak for equality, especially within today’s economy.
